Provision of Slope Management QAQC Services

BHR successfully delivered QAQC Oversight Services for Support installation works at Jwaneng Mine with a 100% safety record.

Works entailed:

  • Geotech reconciliation for sequential mining of benches
  • Providing oversight on the drilling and blasting of the benches
  • Designing a slope monitoring instrumentation plan and providing QAQC Assurance for instrument installation
  • Monitoring installation of GEOMOS targets, extensometers, inclinometers, smart cables, Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) and load cells
  • Coordinating SHE Management compliance and assurance for Geotechnical Contractors
  • Coordinating the QAQC assurance for Geotechnical Contractors / Suppliers on site
  • Undertake the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) adherence validation
  • Monitoring compliance to approved QA/QC procedures and instructions
  • Preparing compliance reports for the Geotechnical Review Board and Mine management

Rockfall Studies

Jwaneng Mine had undergone several slope-design changes in the past with view of improving the safety performance of the slope and where practically possible improve the business case for the mine. The assessment of optimization opportunities for Jwaneng Mine LOM Cut8 and Cut9 slopes have been undertaken, one with specific focus on the incorporation of double bench on the Cut9 inter-ramp and overall slope angles which are on the limits of precedent slope height-angle experience.

Blue Horizon Resources was engaged to embark on a holistic rockfall risk assessment which will also assist with optimizing bench configuration that will satisfy both single bench stability and rockfall risk requirements. The methodology used included rock fall field trials to determine and/or calibrate critical input parameters required for rockfall model simulations, review of historic slope performances to determine the optimal blasting back-break and kinematic analysis per pit sector to determine bench catchment requirements from single bench stability standpoint.

The project scope covered two major deliverables:

  • Jwaneng Pit Rockfall Analysis (Cut 8 & Cut 9)- rockfall risk assessment on conventionally mined slopes
  • Rockfall Analysis Un-Benched Slope Proposal- rockfall risk assessment on battered slopes
