Rockfall Studies
Jwaneng Mine had undergone several slope-design changes in the past with view of improving the safety performance of the slope and where practically possible improve the business case for the mine. The assessment of optimization opportunities for Jwaneng Mine LOM Cut8 and Cut9 slopes have been undertaken, one with specific focus on the incorporation of double bench on the Cut9 inter-ramp and overall slope angles which are on the limits of precedent slope height-angle experience.
Blue Horizon Resources was engaged to embark on a holistic rockfall risk assessment which will also assist with optimizing bench configuration that will satisfy both single bench stability and rockfall risk requirements. The methodology used included rock fall field trials to determine and/or calibrate critical input parameters required for rockfall model simulations, review of historic slope performances to determine the optimal blasting back-break and kinematic analysis per pit sector to determine bench catchment requirements from single bench stability standpoint.
